What is IT maintenance and what does it cover in a company?
IT maintenance is the service that keeps a company’s computers, servers, network and backups working correctly and securely, both by preventing problems and by resolving the incidents that come up. It is not just "fixing things when they break": it is the ongoing work that stops that break from happening in the first place.
What does an IT maintenance technician actually do?
Day to day, a maintenance technician checks that operating systems and applications are up to date, that backups have completed without errors, that antivirus is active on every device and that there are no pending alerts on servers or the network.
When an incident comes up, they are the one who solves it: a workstation that will not start, a printer that stops responding, an application that freezes, or a user who cannot reach a shared folder. They also set up new equipment, configure access and retire devices that are no longer used.
What IT maintenance covers in a company
The scope varies depending on the size of the company and what is agreed with the provider, but it usually covers these elements:
- Workstations: desktop computers, laptops and peripherals
- Physical and virtual servers, including those hosted in the cloud
- The network: router, switches, wifi access points and cabling
- Backups and their periodic verification
- Antivirus and other security tools
- Software licence management and version control
The four types of IT maintenance
Not all maintenance is the same. There are usually four approaches that, in practice, coexist within the same service.
- Preventive: periodic checks to catch problems before they affect daily work
- Corrective: fixing an incident once it has already occurred
- Predictive: monitoring indicators (disk space, temperature, performance) to anticipate failures
- Evolutionary: updates and improvements that adapt systems to the company’s new needs
How you notice that maintenance is done well
When maintenance works well, you barely notice it: incidents are isolated, get resolved quickly and rarely affect several workstations at once. Backups are actually checked, not just launched, and there is a clear inventory of what equipment exists, how old it is and which licences apply.
It also shows in the communication: a good maintenance service warns you before a system becomes obsolete, suggests improvements and explains what it is working on, rather than only showing up when something breaks.
How to hire it at iDeo Networks
At iDeo Networks we treat IT maintenance as an ongoing service adapted to each company, with periodic checks and attention to incidents as they arise according to the agreement with each client. We always start with a review of the current IT setup to understand what is there and what the company’s priorities are.
From there we define what gets checked, how often and which channel is used for incidents, so that maintenance fits the real size and pace of the business, not the other way round.
