Repair or replace the company computer? How to decide without wasting money

7 min readiDeo technical team

It is worth repairing when the fault is isolated (screen, keyboard, battery, disk) and the machine is under four or five years old. It is worth replacing when the operating system has lost support, the hardware can no longer run current software, or it is the third breakdown in a short time. Diagnosis decides, not guesswork.

The question is not "can it be fixed?" but "is it worth fixing?"

Almost any fault can be repaired technically: you can replace a broken screen, swap a keyboard, add memory or fit a new disk. The question that actually matters is different: does the machine still have useful life ahead, or is the repair only delaying the problem by six months?

That is why at iDeo Networks we never repair blindly. Before quoting, we check the age of the machine, the condition of its other components and whether its operating system still receives security updates. With those three facts, the decision is usually clear.

Faults that are easy to fix (and almost always worth it)

Some faults are an isolated incident on an otherwise healthy machine. In these cases repairing is usually far cheaper than replacing:

  • Broken or lined screen: the panel is replaced without touching the rest of the laptop
  • Keyboard that fails or does not respond on some keys
  • Battery that no longer lasts a working day or has swollen
  • Camera or microphone that stop working during video calls
  • Slow or failing hard drive: replacing it with an SSD adds years of life
  • Insufficient RAM for current use

When repairing no longer makes sense

Some signs point clearly towards replacement. The most important is the end of support of the operating system: if the machine cannot be upgraded to a supported version, any repair is a short-term fix and a security risk tomorrow.

History also matters: a laptop that comes into the workshop for the third time in a year is usually closer to the end than the beginning. And there is a physical limit: if the repair cost approaches 50-60% of an equivalent new machine, the maths no longer work.

What happens to your data and settings during the repair

Before opening the machine we back up the relevant information, and once the repair is finished we restore the profile, programs and access exactly as they were.

If the repair involves replacing the disk, we migrate the system and data to the new drive instead of starting from scratch, whenever the state of the operating system allows it.

How we handle repairs at iDeo Networks

We have our own workshop for repairing laptops, desktops, tablets and company phones. The process starts with a free diagnosis, continues with a fixed quote before touching anything, and ends with a functional test before returning the machine.

Many clients get to know us precisely this way: a specific breakdown comes in, we solve it well and transparently, and from there they move on to a managed maintenance contract so that machine, and the rest of the fleet, get regular checks instead of waiting for something to break.

What we do with retired equipment

When a machine reaches the end of its useful life, we securely wipe its disk before it leaves our workshop, so that no company data remains accessible. It is not an optional step: it is part of the process every time we retire hardware.
